Preview inputBC7 and several legacy RGB, luminance, and alpha layouts can be opened when the decoder recognizes them.
Specialist texturesCubemaps, arrays, and volumes can expose the first surface with a warning; BC6H/HDR, depth, and video formats are safely rejected when their pixels cannot be decoded.

DDS contains more than 100 DXGI formats. Unsupported specialist textures are rejected with their format metadata; they are never silently saved as something else.
